December 16, 2018, Noida, India: HCL, a leading global conglomerate, today announced the successful completion of the HCL 75th National Squash Championship. Mahesh Mangaonkar and Joshana Chinappa emerged as winners in the men’s and women’s category, respectively. The winners were felicitated by N. Ramachandran, President of the World Squash Federation and the Guest of Honour for the closing ceremony. The Championship which started on December 9th, 2018 was held at two venues this year, with the initial matches played at Siri Fort Sports Complex in New Delhi and the final matches held at an all-glass court, set up in the HCL Technologies Campus in Noida, Sector-126.
HCL 75th National Squash Championship is a seven-star tournament, the highest rated in the country and was held under the aegis of the Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI) and Squash Association of Delhi. With a prize purse of over Rs. 11 lacs, the championship witnessed participation from a total of 530 players. The top players from the Championship will also receive ranking points and will be included in the National ranking list in the relevant age group.
Speaking on the initiative, Sundar Mahalingam, Chief Strategy Officer, HCL Corporation said, “I would like to congratulate all the participants for their spectacular performance. This was the second consecutive year when HCL hosted the National Senior Squash Championship and it is heartening to see how the performance levels have improved. HCL is focused on promoting sports like Squash that do not enjoy much institutional support. I am hopeful that our efforts will help increase the enthusiasm around these sports and drive greater appreciation from the audience.”
Cyrus Poncha, National Squash Coach at Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI) said, “With the successful completion of the 75th Senior National Championship we have also concluded three very eventful years of working with HCL. I hope that this association will continue even in the future as it has been truly beneficial for the sport. HCL has been a good partner for us and has helped us raise awareness and enthusiasm around Squash.”
The Championship was played in a knock-out format across all categories. The details of the winners and runners up are as follows:
